Stormheart Myth by Edward Drake

This is the sixth book in the Anachron Press Pulp Line. It is also the second Stormheart story in the line. The first was an enjoyable read so I was looking forward to reading this one. There are parallels between the two books, particularly the sacrifices of the main character. There are however a lot of differences. The main one for me was the storytelling. It feels like a completely different book. I had to check the author’s name to make sure it was the same writer. It was. I found the change of style really interesting and it added a freshness to the story. This story can be read as a stand-alone piece of fiction but it works better if you have that extra bit of investment in Stormheart that can only be gained from reading the first story.

A fantasy story of this length is never going to be classed as epic high fantasy but it does well in avoiding the trap of being a hack and slash blood and gore fest. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of nasty deaths in this story but they serve a purpose. There is very little in the way of wasted words in this book. It is stories like this that make me want to read more short form fantasy stories.
